Hunter Thompson Roll Call

Posted by Erin  Published in Announcements, Hunter Thompson, Pictures Permalinks

The People’s Republic of Flying Dog is now in session. It’s happy hour at Flying Dog Brewery, so here is your latest dose of irreverence.

With the 4th of July approaching there’s been a surge of Dr. Gonzo-related items in the news. I don’t know if this is a coincidence, but these tributes couldn’t come at a more fitting time of the year, seeing Hunter was a fierce defender of the American Dream. Although these tributes are all fitting, the biggest one you could give our co-conspirator and avid political junkie is to get involved and passionate with the looming election.
Gonzo: The Life and Work of Dr. Hunter S Thompson
Gonzo: The Life and Work of Dr. Hunter S. Thompson is the long awaited documentary from director Alex Gibney about Hunter. This film has been making the film festival rounds to rave reviews and now the time has come to unleash it on us common folk who go to movie theaters. The film’s official release is Friday, July 4th. Click on the image to visit the official website and view the trailer or just follow this link.

Read Neil Miller’s review of the movie at filmschoolrejects.com.

My Father: The Outlaw
Best Life magazine has put together a series of articles in their “Family and Fatherhood” section entitled Lessons From Famous and Infamous Fathers. These are first hand accounts written by the sons of various noteworthy dads. Juan Thompson recently added his account of the lessons he learned from Hunter: The Outlaw. Read Juan’s account of life with Dr. Gonzo here or visit the Best Life website to read the other lessons form the likes of Johnny Cash, St. John Hart, Reverend Franklin Graham and more.Conversations With Hunter S. Thompson
Lastly on the HST barrage is the new book by Beef Torrey and Kevin Simonson titled Conversations with Hunter S. Thompson. The description from the book’s website explains that, “Conversations with Hunter S. Thompson is the first compilation of selected personal interviews that traces the trajectory of his prolific and much-publicized career. These engaging exchanges reveal Thompson’s determination, self-indulgence, energy, outrageous wit, ire, and passions as he discusses his life and work.” To order Conversations with Hunter S. Thompson click on the image or visit this link.

Flickr is an online photo community where you can upload and share your pictures with your friends and family, and also a great way to access your photos from anywhere in the world. Flying Dog has been adding photos to our Flickr account the last few years and we’ve built up a good collection of images.

We figured the People’s Republic of Flying Dog should be able to share in all our shenanigans as well. So we started a flickr group dedicated to Flying Dog Brewery. If you are a flickr user and take photos of things pertaining to Flying Dog, we want you to add them to our photo pool. Questions? Email us at bullshit@flyingdogales.com and we can help you nerd out with your photo collection.

    Flying Dog Photo Contest

Posted by Erin  Published in Contests, Pictures Permalinks

The People’s Republic of Flying Dog is now in session. It’s happy hour at Flying Dog Brewery, so here is your latest dose of irreverence.
Flying Dog Photo ContestA friend of Flying Dog recently snapped this photo while on a visit to Boston. Inspired by her fairly poor photographic skills, we decided to have a photo contest and give the winner a neon sign to honor her efforts. Pictures can be of anything you choose; they just have to incorporate Flying Dog in some way, whether it be the beer bottle, t-shirt, sign or anything else your perverse mind can dream up. To enter, send your picture of Flying Dog in action to photocontest@flyingdogales.com. Pictures will be displayed on our contest page. The contest runs through March 15th so take your time and come up with a winner. The SessionOn the first Friday of every month, beer bloggers around the country unite to thoroughly cover one beer-related topic. The topics vary but usually focus on educating beer drinkers on a particular beer style. February’s Session will be held on Friday the 1st and will cover Barley Wines. You can find Flying Dog’s entry at FlyingDogNews.com and BeerDinners.com. If you want a list of beer blogs where you can catch this month’s Session, check out our Blogs page or Google - The Session Beer. If you’re a blogger and want to participate in this unique event, check here for the Brew Site’s post about February’s Session.

Don’t Take Our Word For It…We recently stumbled across this gentleman’s photos from a tour he took at our Frederick, MD facility. We always like to brag about ourselves but it’s great when other people do it for us. We didn’t even slip this guy money under the table, I swear. Check out this link for all the photos and recap of the great time you’ve been missing. Tours are at 1:30 on Saturdays; for full details check out the tour page at FlyingDogAles.com.
    Till next time, cheers

Thirteen and a half years, doesn’t seem like that much.
But times seven that’s ninety five years he gave to me?to us. I
couldn’t – shouldn’t ask for more. As summer turned into fall he had
multiple bouts with pneumonia, at last the frustrated vet took an
ultrasound which showed a heart that was just a giant tumor. He looked
at us with a question mark and we nodded yes.

As the sedative went in by IV he looked at me?at us with that same love of
thirteen and a half years in his eyes; then he lay his chin on his
forelegs and closed his eyes, at peace.

I walked slowly through this stately place just to see if it would help.

    What to do with Hunter

Posted by Erin  Published in Announcements, Beer, Events, Pictures, Videos Permalinks

The People’s Republic of Flying Dog is now in session.

It’s happy hour at Flying Dog Brewery, so here is your latest dose of irreverence. Last newsletter, I asked for help figuring out what to do with the Hunter Thompson mannequin that was dropped off at the Brewery. The easy answer was to blow it up and although that’s what we’re leaning toward, it has already been done. So I chose to reward creativity and detail. Answers ranged from self serving to political, and a few that made me question some people’s mental stability. If you don’t like what I chose, get your own newsletter.

    The Winner:
Sneak into the cemetery, and stand it up, in a urinating posture, over Nixon’s grave.Run an arc of 16-gauge wire from Hunter’s fly to the ground, and spiral yellow e-wire around that wire. When the e-wire is hooked to a 9-volt battery, it will flash all night. I think HST would approve.

    -Walt in Austin

    My Personal Favorite:
Cut a hole in the mouth, put a wet sponge inside and give it to Eric Warner (Flying Dog Brewery President) so he can enjoy his first experience with oral sex in 10 years.

    -James (residence not disclosed)

    Ralph’s Thoughts:
That effigy of Hunter is a horrible joke! At first I thought he had been dug up and restored. But not even Flying Dog Beer could reach those parts. He looks like he was cremated but the fire was put out with Woody Creek White. Matt’s right! There are some things that were even unacceptable to Hunter.. don’t forget: GOOD PEOPLE DRINK GOOD BEER.

Our video this week features our friends next door at Stranahan’s Colorado Whiskey. They’ve created their own unique take on whiskey and are calling it “Colorado Whiskey” which is a hybrid between Scotch and Bourbon distilling traditions. Stranahan’s is Colorado’s first legal whiskey distillery since prohibition and whiskey being my beverage of choice after beer I can assure you it is world class stuff. Just click on the image to the left to check out our cousin company in action.

Below is of our upcoming events. Come out and throw down with the People’s Republic of Flying Dog.

    July 4th - Liberty Run
July 6th - Art in the City
    July 7th - Brewer’s Rendezvous

    Till next time, cheers,

    Chris
