The People’s Republic of Flying Dog is now in session. It’s happy hour at Flying Dog Brewery, so here is your latest dose of irreverence.

Kerberos Released On Unsuspecting Public The long-awaited arrival of our Belgian-style Tripel is upon us. Named after the mythical Greek three-headed dog that guards the gates of hell, Kerberos is a traditional Belgian-style Tripel with a dark golden color has a sweet flavor with a dry and spicy finish. This nectar of the Gods is deceptively strong at 8.5% and is bottle conditioned for an authentic flavor. Beer nerd stuff below:

ABV: 8.5%
Plato: 19
Specialty Malts: 2-Row Pilsner, Aromatic
Hops: German Perle, French Strisserspalt, Saaz
Process: Bottle conditioned to create authentic Tripel character.

Check out www.FlyingDogAles.com for more on Kerberos and the rest of the Flying Dog litter of ales.

Cross Country Tour
From April 25th-28th the Flying Dog RV will be taking a tour down I-70 to the east coast. Because a 28-hour drive is long enough to make anyone ponder their existence, I thought it would be fun to spice up the trip with a contest. If you get a picture of the RV on the road during our journey and email it to me at bullshit@flyingdogales.com with the date, time, and location you took the picture, I will send you a gift package full of Flying Dog gear. If you don’t live anywhere near I-70 (which will prevent you from participating), you can take comfort in the fact that you get the consolation prize. You are miles away from my road rage and I won’t be rear-ending you when you’re talking on your cell phone while driving like an asshole.Flying Dog Lands At #29 In Craft Beer RankingsWe here at Flying Dog want to extend our gratitude to all those out there in the People’s Republic of Flying Dog for making us one of the country’s top 30 craft beer breweries. The numbers, just released by the Brewer’s Association (www.beertown.org), have Flying Dog jumping several spots from 2006. We appreciate the support - and get those livers trained because we expect you to step up and land us in the top 20 this year. Our Quest For World Domination ContinuesOn Monday, a container chock-full of delicious Flying Dog brews will start its journey to Singapore. As our latest addition to the People’s Republic of Flying Dog, Singaporeans will join the likes of Austria, Sweden, Denmark, the Netherlands, Norway, Italy, UK (and more!), further strengthening our ever-growing international contingent. Now if only the Brewery would pony up the cash to send me on a 4-month long “sales tour” to all those regions. I get no respect. What People Are Saying About Us Mostly unsolicited, outside opinions about our beer and our company from the media and world wide web. NEW SPRING SEASONAL RELEASED!

Posted by Chris  Published in Events, Beer, Announcements, Contests Permalinks

The People’s Republic of Flying Dog is now in session. It’s happy hour at Flying Dog Brewery, so here is your latest dose of irreverence.Flying Dog Releases New Spring Seasonal Garde Dog Biere De Garde, our new Spring Seasonal has started shipping to distributors across the country this week. Hailing from the French Flanders, Biere De Garde is a classic French farmhouse ale with Belgian influences. Bier De Garde, or “beer for keeping”, is traditionally brewed in March for drinking in the spring and summer months.  I will avoid any humorous, yet harmless French stereotyping in this newsletter because it is available to read on the label.

With it’s toasted aroma and spicy, malty sweetness, Garde Dog will liberate you from the winter doldrums.

Beer MadnessThe Washington Post has come up with the brilliant idea to create a college basketball-style March Madness competition for beer. Now, if only they had Vegas-style odds to match each round it would be the perfect competition. Old Scratch beat down its first round opponent, Michelob, but we actually lost the popular vote (a la the 2000 election). Seriously? We lost the popular vote to Michelob? I need members of the People’s Republic to step up and flog the next round opponent, Brooklyn Beer. To follow all the action and show your support for Old Scratch check out this link.
Flying Dog Photo ContestWith over 130 entries from the People’s Republic of Flying Dog we had a hell of a time picking a winner. There were many worthy entries and we thank everyone… blah, blah, blah. The winner entitled “The Last Call” was submitted by Mike Reaser and Mike Frederick. They win for creativity and execution. Congrats gentlemen, your Flying Dog neon will be shipping shortly. Check out their winning photo and all the contest entries at this link.

at us with a question mark and we nodded yes.

As the sedative went in by IV he looked at me?at us with that same love of

    Flying Dog Migrates East

Posted by Chris  Published in Announcements, Contests Permalinks

The People’s Republic of Flying Dog is now in session. It’s happy hour at Flying Dog Brewery, so here is your latest dose of irreverence.
Message From Flying Dog President Eric WarnerTo the People’s Republic of Flying DogAs some of you may have heard, Flying Dog Brewery announced on Tuesday that we are embarking on the next step in our illustrious, 17 year history of crafting remarkable beer by concentrating all of our brewing and production to the brewery in Frederick, MD, where 70% of Flying Dog Beer is already being brewed. This move will take place in January and we are working to ensure that our entire production team will be able to make this move over to Maryland. Accounting, sales, marketing and other administrative functions will remain largely unaffected by this change and our HQ will remain in Denver.

We decided to make this proactive move as it has become increasingly important to be extremely nimble in today’s business environment. Only those who can quickly adapt in the hyper-Darwinian economy will survive and in today’s craft brewing landscape. We are facing unprecedented cost pressures due in large part to the tremendous hop and malt cost increases. We have also lost some of the contract brewing business we had, thereby decreasing capacity utilization at both breweries (I actually found out AFTER the announcement that one of our largest contracts was going to switch their production to a lower cost producer, thereby diminishing our capacity utilization at the Denver Brewery even further). Concentrating our brewing operations to one facility will help us become more efficient while maintaining our exceptionally high brewing standards. This is a smart, proactive move for our growing company and will allow us to most efficiently use our resources. This idea was conceived in late summer, and once we understood the magnitude of the price increases we are facing it became apparent that this was a necessary step to remain strong. Like most other craft breweries our costs are going up at least 25%, and we are only going to be passing on a 15-20% price increase. We expect some relief on raw materials costs in 2009. Obviously, a huge focus for the production teams in 2008 will be to discover and implement new ways to be more efficient, without sacrificing the quality of our award winning line up.

The Frederick facility is a state-of-the-art brewery that has already been producing great beer for Flying Dog and we look forward to ramping up production and growing our business even more than the +20% trends we are experiencing in 2007. The bottling line in Frederick has lower oxygen uptake at filling than the one in Denver, which translates to better flavor stability and longer shelf life. It also kicks out bottles at twice the pace of the line in Denver. The brewhouse in Maryland is also capable of brewing a wider range of recipes than the one in Denver. Finally, the brewery in MD plans on substantial capital expenditures and plant upgrades (close to a million bucks in 2008 alone) to continue to brew better beer in an efficient and environmentally friendly way. It was very important to me, the management team and the owners of the brewery to take care of the employees who might be impacted by this change. Everyone in production was offered an opportunity to make the move to the brewery in Maryland. I’m proud to say that almost half of the brewing and bottling line staff is interested and we will be taking a group trip out to MD in early January so they can see if Frederick is a place they would like to relocate to. For those that don’t make the move, we will be offering a severance package and outplacement assistance. 14 employees in production are impacted by this change. When we broke the news Tuesday everyone handled it pretty well, and as a brewery we decided to go out in style and still have our holiday party this Friday. Although some could argue the timing was a little close to the holidays, we also considered that some employees might be more upset that if they were told after the holidays, having spent more money than otherwise having not known they were going to potentially be laid off. There is truly never a good time for such news.

We are a family here at Flying Dog and as such it’s been a rollercoaster of emotions the last couple of days. Although no one, myself included, would have chosen to write the script quite this way, everyone understands this chapter, why it makes sense and why it’s good for the future of the brewery. The good news for the People’s Republic is that the Flying Dog beers will still be available wherever you are used to purchasing them.

    Cheers,
    Eric Warner

Interview With EricGonzo BottleThis turn of events doesn’t deter me from fulling my promise of giving away free shit. Here are the answers to our three winning questions from Tom Wethern of Allston, MA, Mary Capps of Austin, TX and Tony Rockwell of Boise, ID. Your Ralph Steadman signed bottles of Gonzo Imperial Porter are on the way. Here are the answers to our three winning questions.

Do you ever worry, though, that with Ralph Steadman’s artwork and the kooky beer names, it comes across to many people as a gimmick? That the presentation is more important than the resultant brew, that you favor appearance over content?

“Our philosophy from day on was beer is art. The original vision was to have a different artist for every label but Steadman’s art reflects the brand so well it was a no-brainer. Our brand isn’t for everyone. There is enough beer labels out there with little pastoral mountain scenes. We like to do things a little differently.”

Steadman’s images will always be inextricably connected to Hunter S. Thompson, the poster child for dysfunctional but creative excess. Aren’t you concerned that potential customers of your products will feel you might be encouraging the same kind of dangerous excess by associating your products so strongly with that image?

“People seem to be using our products just as responsibly as the guy who gets wasted on a 30-pack of domestic swill. At the time of year when we get together with our families, who isn’t dysfunctional? There was a public side of Hunter that people like to see as dysfunctional but he was as real as it gets. So even if he was counter culture he exposed a lot of the dysfunction in our society and political processes so if that is what people associate with our brewery, so be it.”

What are your plans for transitioning into a more eco-friendly business, for example by using solar power within the brewery to produce an excellent nut brown ale (hint) or your current line of fine brews?

“Although the Maryland brewery wasn’t “Green Built” part of the reasons for the move is it is a newer, more efficient facility. As alternative energy sources become more accessible and cost effective we will look to tap into those as well. Like most other craft breweries, right now we are most focused on the staggering disruption in the malt and hop markets so our biggest challenge is getting the highest yields out of those products without compromising product quality. As breweries achieve this it is in itself more eco-friendly saving on energy use in transportation and production.”Last Chance For Holiday ShoppingJust in time for your Holiday shopping we have created new gift packs. Give your friends and family something they actually want this year. Check out the Flying Dog Apparel website for all our merchandise. SAVE ROAD DOG CAMPAIGN

Posted by Chris  Published in Events, Promotions, Beer, Contests Permalinks

The People’s Republic of Flying Dog is now in session. It’s happy hour at Flying Dog Brewery, so here is your latest dose of irreverenceHelp Save Road Dog!

We have no room to complain here at Flying Dog; with all your help we have been growing like crazy and spreading the Flying Dog gospel along the way. Unfortunately, there have been some disturbing rumblings coming from the office of Flying Dog President Eric Warner in recent weeks. Sales of Road Dog, the original Gonzo label done by Mr. Steadman, have been slumping and due to a keg shortage we already had to discontinue Road Dog on draft. Now, I know there are copious amounts of RoadDog fans out there and I would hate to see Eric make hasty decisions like he is known to do. Help me by joining in the “Save Road Dog Campaign”. Send your best defense for Road Dog to bullshit@flyingdogales.com and we will beat Eric into submission. The best response will be published in the next newsletter and win a free Road Dog t-shirt, pint glass and a Flying Dog cap. And for the sake of all that is holy, go out and drink some damn Road Dog.Check out more of Road Dog’s turbulent history at FlyingDogAles.com.

Send Us Your VideoLast week I mentioned that Flying Dog had launched a new website called BeerDinners.com. We want to make your cooking skills world famous; not Food Network famous,700 but we’ll do the best we can. Send us video footage of your next beer dinner (or a YouTube link) and we will post the good, bad and ugly up on BeerDinners.com and Flying Dog Brewery’s video page. I haven’t figured out what you’ll get yet but the best submissions will be rewarded.

    Flying Dog Apparel Artist Series
Flying Dog Apparel and SupportLocalCreativity.com are launching a new t-shirt series featuring designs from independent artists from around the country. If you are an artist and wish to submit your artwork for consideration, please email supportcreativity@supportlocalcreativity.com for full details. Artists will be paid for their artwork as well as being featured at SupportLocalCreativity.com. The submission deadline for Flying Dog’s first Artist Series is Oct. 31 so get inspired and help Flying Dog promote your work.

All this happened and no cops showed up, if that’s not a solid afternoon, I don’t know what is.

In this 1978 documentary, Hunter outlines his plans for an epic funeral complete with cannon explosions and his Gonzo Fist monument. We have posted the final recipe and label so all those of you out there in homebrew land can make your own versions and compare it to ours. Take a sick day and get to brewing, we’ll vouch for you.

Fear and Loathing on the Campaign Trail
Flying Dog Brewery in partnership with our owner, George Stranahan, will be launching a new website in a few months to honor his long time friend Hunter Thompson.

FearAndLoathingOnTheCampaignTrail2008.com will not only be a tribute to Hunter’s adept political journalism but also, a forum to bring meaningful and relevant conversations to the 2008 presidential campaign.
We are asking for the help of you, the People’s Republic of Flying Dog, to create this website. What is “The American Dream” and how do we keep it alive? If you have content you would like to contribute or have ideas on how the website should be built please email your submissions to bullshit@flyingdogales.com. Dr. Gonzo Sighted At Flying Dog

The People’s Republic of Flying Dog is now in session.

It’s happy hour at Flying Dog Brewery, so here is your latest dose of irreverence. We recently had a visit from our good friend, Matt Mosley, who brought this HST mannequin that he had commissioned for his recent birthday party. This thing is scary real and even has an original “Free Lisl” (Google it) button to boot. To make a long story short, after a week of freaking out Matt’s wife, she made him get it out of the house and he was nice enough to let Flying Dog Brewery become Hunter’s temporary home. Matt, who knew Hunter personally, told me, “He would have hated this thing.” So here’s my question to The People’s Republic: What do we do with this mannequin of the late, great, Dr. Gonzo? Let me know at bullshit@flyingdogales.com. The best answer will win one of our limited edition Wild Dog Barrel-Aged Gonzo Gift Sets and maybe we’ll actually take them up on their suggestion. I’m really curious as to what Mr. Steadman will have to say of this abomination after reading this week’s newsletter.

Speaking of Hunter, on Saturday we’re heading up to his old stomping grounds - the Woody Creek Tavern for our Woody Creek White release party. See our event list below for details and Flying Dog’s other upcoming events.

June 16th - Woody Creek White Release Party
    June 21st - Flying Dog/Wyeast Special Symposium
June 21-23 - American Homebrew Conference
    June 23-24 - Colorado Brewer’s Fest
    June 23rd - AfroBlu

Flying Dog Apparel is having a fire sale on T-shirts and posters as we make room for our new designs. If there was ever a time to be irresponsible with your rent money it’s now as gear is close to 50% off. There isn’t much left, so hop online and buy some shit.

It’s your last chance to participate in our Open Source Beer Project which runs through the end of the June. Get on your computer and give us your underqualified opinion on how to brew up our next Wild Dog release.

    Till next time, cheers,

    And The Winner Is…

The People’s Republic of Flying Dog is now in session.

It’s happy hour at Flying Dog Brewery, so here is your latest dose of irreverence. We’ve got too much shit going on this week for any witty banter so I’m going to dive right into it. This week we have the launch of the Open Source Beer Project, the release of our new Summer seasonal Woody Creek White, Part 4 of our brewery tour series and last but not least, me revealing who won the signed Ralph Steadman bottles of Gonzo. Not to mention upcoming events and a new discount code.

Open Source Beer Project Beer Recipe Many of you are already familiar with our Wild Dog specialty beer series. The Open Source Beer Project gives The People’s Republic of Flying Dog the chance to help create our next Wild Dog beer recipe. The Open Source Beer Project will start as a Dopplebock but the style may evolve as participants offer ideas and tweak the recipe. “We are encouraging input on every part of the recipe, down to how and what variety of hops we should use, how much we should use and when we should add them,” said Flying Dog’s Head Brewer, Matt Brophy.

Whether you’re an experienced home brewer, beer connoisseur or just like to drink, hop onto www.opensourcebeerproject.com and give us your input.

Flying Dog Woody Creek White Beer A few months back, many of you entered a contest to name our new summer seasonal. Now that summer is here, it is time for us to release Woody Creek White and help everyone cope with the weather as it approaches triple digits. Tom Havey of Wilsonville, OR named our Belgian Style Wit beer and will enjoy a trip to the Great American Beer Festival on Flying Dog. On the right is what Ralph Steadman did with Tom’s name, click on the image for more information on Woody Creek White.

Signed Ralph Steadman Bottles of Gonzo Imperial Porter Now, on to the reason most of you have read this far, the signed Ralph Steadman bottles of Gonzo. I got over 1000 entries with some people calling me things I didn’t even know existed. Well done, members of the Republic. The funny part is the women are far more foul mouthed than the men. Congratulations to Sean Hansen from Cave Creek, AZ and Scott Gannon from we’re not sure yet. Just because you were guys were randomly selected doesn’t mean you can’t boast of your superiority. Your signed bottles are in the mail.

Part 4 of our brewery tour series has just been released by Flying Dog Productions. This is the final clip in the four part tour series, so sit back and watch them all so you can wow your friends with beer knowledge. The complete series will also soon be available on our beer tours page as a virtual tour.
