Vote Early, Often

Posted by Erin  Published in Announcements, Beer, Events, Promotions, Videos Permalinks

The People’s Republic of Flying Dog is now in session. It’s happy hour at Flying Dog Brewery, so here is your latest dose of irreverence.Election SeasonThe time has come to flex your democratic muscle. There is nothing more sacred than voting (ask the billions of people that can’t) and Flying Dog is a full believer in exercising your right. Some say that our elections have come down to the equivalent of trying to choose between a thumb-tack enema and a flesh-eating virus. But I tend to be a bit more optimistic. Should the People’s Republic not like their choices, one can always write in for a darkhorse candidate. Like Mr. Chris Rippe (even though I’m not 35 yet). Either way, voting is a privilege and should be exercised for the simple fact that you can. Besides, should you win or lose, Flying Dog will be there to comfort or celebrate with you. Looking for something to drink on Tuesday night while watching returns? Check out our “What to Drink on Election Night” post over at flyingdognews.com.

This close to the election, I found it only appropriate to include some of Ralph Steadman’s satire as the Art Of The Week for this newsletter.K-9 Cruiser Comes Out Of Hibernation As most creatures are slumbering down for their winter rest, K-9 Cruiser is just waking from his dormant summer. Dark, sweet and malty, our annual Winter Ale says, “embrace the snow and accept winter as your savior.” K-9 Cruiser will be hitting the shelves nationwide in the next few weeks, so keep your eyes on your favorite liquor store’s shelves.

FBAG Rocked Our Socks OffDuring the Great American Beer Festival in Denver a couple weeks ago, Flying Dog hosted our inaugural FBAG (Flying Dog, Brats & Gonzo) on the afternoon of Friday, October 10, 2008. We had several self-serve beer stations pouring our Canis Major series brews, brats on the grill, as well as our newest Wild Dog release, Dog Schwarz. Oh, and 700 people showed up, which was awesome. Check out the video footage here and listen to Matt Brophy (our VP of Brewing Operations) give you the low-down on his brew crew’s new creation. Hint: Click here if you want to watch the video in HD.
Flying Dog Night at Max’s in BaltimoreJoin the Flying Dog crew next Thursday, November 6th as we roll into Baltimore for Flying Dog Night at Max’s on Broadway. Max’s is one of the premier beer bars on the east coast and we are proud to be doing them justice with a beer menu for the ages. Flying Dog have 9 beers on tap, the new Wild Dog in bottles, and  we’ll be holding a vertical tasting of Gonzo. For the full menu follow this link.

    Release The Hounds of Dogtoberfest

Posted by Erin  Published in Beer, Contests, Events Permalinks

The People’s Republic of Flying Dog is now in session. It’s happy hour at Flying Dog Brewery, so here is your latest dose of irreverence.Release The Hounds of DogtoberfestDogtoberfest is our annual fall tribute to one of the greatest beer traditions in the entire world. Oktoberfest was started in 1810 by King Ludwig I of Bavaria to celebrate his marriage to Princess Therese of Saxony-Hildburghausen. As with many wedding celebrations, Oktoberfest has swelled to an all-out rager. In its 175th year (some were lost to wars, etc.), Oktoberfest now hosts millions in its native Bavaria with millions more worldwide jumping on the bandwagon and pretending to be German. Who can turn down a great party? See St. Patrick’s Day, Gonzofest and Cinco De Mayo for Exhibits B and C and D.

Dogtoberfest is our award-winning, traditional German Marzen. Deep mahogany in color with an intriguing caramel finish, Dogtoberfest is brewed with 100% imported German ingredients for a true German flavor. Lederhosen and crazed Oompah Bands encouraged.

Food and Beer Session 3It’s high time to announce Session 3 of our monthly Food and Beer pairing extravaganza held in the Frederick, MD Flying Dog Brewery tasting room. Food and Beer nights are limited to the first 50 guests and fill up faster than a brothel on coupon night - so get your RSVP, in soon. As with all the other Food and Beer sessions, things kick off at 6pm on the first Thursday of the month, September 4th in this case. This month’s theme is “South of The Border” so prepare yourself for a little spicy flavor. Check out the full menu and RSVP information at our event calendar.

Ralph Rocks The Poet Laureate Contest Last newsletter we asked the People’s Republic of Flying Dog for entries to our Flying Dog Poet Laureate contest. Now, the great Gonzo artist, Ralph Steadman, has contributed a little poetry of his own to inspire all you lyrical viseroys that might be contemplating participation. You can view Ralph’s poetic contribution at Flying Dog’s contest page. Ralph has also graciously agreed to select our winner because in his words, “I’m quite partial to a spot of verbal serendipity.” Get your fingers typing (or pens writing if you’re old school) and churn out something that would make your high school English teacher proud. What People Are Saying About UsThe links below are mostly unsolicited outside opinions about our beer and our company from the media and internet. Nick remembered everybody’s name who had been to La Cocina at least twice,
and we were there at least twice a month. I offered to buy this large
painting at every visit, and Nick’s answer was always, “Never.” When
Nick retired I tried one more time and the answer was, “I’m giving it
to the artist’s granddaughter and you may make a photocopy.” The
appeal to me, as it was to anybody else who took a long look was, “Man,
I’ve felt exactly like that.” And just what is that feeling of going
down to the creek at dusk, alone, and with a bottle of tequila? To take
a swig, and another, maybe down to the bottom before returning to
whatever awaits one at the end of dusk?  My grand daughter pointed at me and said  “goo
goo,” and so I came to be called. My son said “Send bail,” and the
young mother with cancer got the teacher of the year award. And my wife
of these many years, she kneels now every day for hours before her
shrine to St. Finbarr - yet still there’s pleasure. I grieve that grief can teach me nothing.  R.W. Emerson

Woody Creek White Makes ‘08 Summer Debut

Posted by Erin  Published in Announcements, Beer, Videos Permalinks

The People’s Republic of Flying Dog is now in session. It’s happy hour at Flying Dog Brewery, so here is your latest dose of irreverence.Summer Finds Its Savior
No summer would be complete without the annual appearance of Flying Dog’s Summer seasonal, Woody Creek White. Flying Dog’s most popular seasonal will be available through September and although I don’t like to support global warming, the heat just makes this beer taste better. Click here for more on Woody Creek White or check out the story found on the label below:

“Flying Dog Brewery founder George Stranahan is widely considered to be the unofficial mayor of Woody Creek, Colorado. George and his collection of social misfits known as “Woody Creatures” are the reason this mountain community has morphed into Gonzo Ground Zero. This unfiltered and traditionally spiced Wit Beer pay tribute to this hotbed of progressive thought.”
It Texts And Wins, Or It Gets The Hose Again.
The only thing better than drinking Flying Dog is winning free shit while you do it. This summer, Flying Dog is holding our first “Text and Win” promotion. If you don’t know how to text message, you need to leave the 1990s behind and use this fancy device called the internet to figure things out (or ask anyone under the age of 30). Prizes include t-shirts, pint glasses, hats and more. Look for neck hangers on specially marked Flying Dog 6-packs and 4-packs to enter. Check out the Text and Win page at FlyingDogAles.com for full details.

Brilliant ArtWe always like to think of our brewers as artists in their own right - that’s why we have a world-class artist like Ralph Steadman grace the labels of our “Liquid Mona Lisas”. For that reason, I feel it’s my duty to share with you brilliant artistic talent when I find it. Blu, a street artist from Italy, recently released a video entitled MUTO. Despite your personal feelings about graffiti art, one must admit this is pure genius. Check out this link or click on the image to view MUTO or visit BluBlu.org.

Of course we had no business passing through the Braldu Gorge and trekking the length of the Baltoro Glacier to Concordia, throne room of the
mountain gods. Sure we’d all backpacked around the rockies, but these are the Himalayas and we’re going to K2 base camp, base of the second highest mountain in the world. We called it “The March of the Innocents,” for we were totally innocent of the knowledge and skills necessary for safe travel in this environment.

We did know some real himalayan mountaineers, and besides telling us we were crazy they offered much free and sincere advice. For sure, they said, at altitude the sun is more intense and will overheat us dreadfully. Buy an umbrella in the Rawalpindi market and take it with you for the shade.  We were told many other things too, some that we found wise and useful. But the umbrellas? We dutifully bought them in the Rawalpindi market and abandoned them a few days into the march. The porters didn’t even bother to salvage them. “Innocence must die, if we are ever to begin that journey toward the greater innocence called wisdom.”   James Baldwin
