The People’s Republic of Flying Dog is now in session. It’s happy hour at Flying Dog Brewery, so here is your latest dose of irreverence. K-9 Cruiser Makes Annual Appearance
Flying Dog’s winter seasonal, K-9 Cruiser, has been released nationwide just in time for the Holidays. There is no better way to cope with your obnoxious family than K-9 Cruiser in mass quantities. Dark, sweet and malty, K-9 Cruiser goes great with with almost any holiday food. For more info on K-9, click on the bottle to the left.
Thanksgiving Beer Pairings The Brewers Association has come up with a program called Craft
Beer and Food for the Holidays. As a participant, Flying Dog has put together some beer pairings with traditional holiday foods. This Thanksgiving, put those winos in their place. For other food and beer pairings, check out www.BeerDinners.com.
Traditional Roast Turkey: The roasted and caramelized skin matches well with a golden ale like Flying Dog’s Tire Bite.
Ham: In-Heat Wheat’s taste profile often reminds people of banana and clove notes and would be a perfect pairing with ham that is prepared with fruit and seasonings.
Duck: Flying Dog’s Winter Seasonal, K-9 Cruiser, makes a perfect companion to a darker meat like duc, which offers a richer flavor than turkey.
Salmon: An amber lager like Old Scratch can offer a clean toasted malt note to offset the firm flavors of salmon without a lot of bitterness that would overwhelm the fish.
Leg of Lamb: Pale ales like Doggie-style Classic Pale Ale provide a pleasant foil to lamb with a spicy or herbal character to complement the character of the meat along with some toasted malt notes. Or for more harmony with the roasted flavors of the meat, try Road Dog Porter.
Beef Tenderloin: This rich hearty cut of meat deserves a robust beer as a counterpoint but also calls for some contrast to clear the palate between bites. The ideal companion would Double Dog Double Pale Ale.
Weekly Treat
I’m going to do my best to make this sound like a L.L. Bean catalog. Flying Dog Apparel’s weekly discount item is this stylish beanie. With ski season quickly approaching, you can make all your friends envy your superior fashion sense and thrifty shopping habits. Besides, Neal said if Brianne doesn’t sell all these by the end of November she is going to get fired. I really like staring at her across the desk so help a brotha out and buy one.
Neal Stewart = Huge Deal
Neal is the Director of Marketing for Flying Dog and the boss of yours truly. He also happens to be a huge deal in the marketing world. He is currently in Las Vegas speaking at the Word Of Mouth Marketing Association conference. This is a link to a blog that is written about Mr. Stewart from a gentleman that apparently has a huge man crush on him. Unfortunately, Neal turned down his invite to the prom.
Till next time, cheers

The People’s Republic of Flying Dog is now in session. It’s happy hour at Flying Dog Brewery, so here is your latest dose of irreverence.Old Scratch Wins Bronze
With another Great American Beer Festival (GABF) in the books, Old Scratch has once again added to its trophy case. Old Scratch, our most award winning beer, now boasts 2 GABF Gold Medals - one Bronze, a World Beer Cup Silver Medal and a couple international awards; all in the past 3 years. Let’s hope Old Scratch can avoid the steroid scandals that have recently caused other world-class performers to be stripped of their hardware.
Some of you out there in the People’s Republic might be asking, “One medal? Who’s judging this competition?” We prefer to look at the glass half full. There were over 2700 beers judged and many breweries walked away empty handed. Besides, we would rather impress all of the Citizen’s of the Republic than some snooty beer judge with a “Million Dollar Palate”.
Great American Beer Festival Videos
For all you members of the People’s Republic who wanted to come to the GABF festivities but made up some lame excuse to prevent yourselves from having the time of your life: We say shame on you! Luckily, we were kind enough record a bunch of the action, so pull up a chair and a six-pack and have your own GABF party in the safety of your own home. Click on the image to the left to check out the video footage of the GABF, our Zombie Dance Party, as well as the Wild Dog Release Party.
Additionally, Justin Davis from the podcast Davis On Draft came and did a live taping at our Wild Dog Release Party, complete with an interview with our Head Brewer, Matt Brophy. He leads up to the interview by sampling and describing some of the specialty beers we had available. Click here to listen to the podcast.
Till next time, cheers

Dad, I’ve heard your stories, and mostly more than once. And you showed me
the medals and the expert rifleman pin, you know I love you and am
proud of you. I know you were in the army; and I understand that was a
big deal for you and that you need to retell the stories. Let me be
clear about what I hate; I hate war. You went to war, your granddaddy
went to war, and endless great great granddaddies back to the beginning
of time went to war. You all together have built a world where I too
will have to go to war, and I hate you all for this.
When you glorify and make heroes of warriors, you will have warriors until the end of time.
“Only the dead have seen the end of war.” George Santayana

It may seem like we say this every time we release a Wild Dog beer, but our newest brew really is Flying Dog’s most unique beer to date. Collaborator Doppelbock was created through Flying Dog’s Open Source Beer Project, which gave amateur brewers a chance to give our brewing team recommendations and feedback on everything from the grain, hops and yeast to the brewing process itself. We combined your feedback and created a unique Doppelbock recipe to brew up and release. Collaborator has a full body with a sweet malt profile and a slight roast character. The complete recipe and printable labels are available for download at www.OpenSourceBeerProject.com. We want to thank everyone who contributed to creating this beer; it truly was a collaboration.
The Great American Beer Festival
It is once again time for the biggest celebration in beer, The Great American Beer Festival. As beer freaks from around the globe arrive here in Denver, it would be rude for Flying Dog (being Denver’s largest brewery) not to be a good hometown host. The People’s Republic of Flying Dog is now in session. It’s happy hour at Flying Dog Brewery, so here is your latest dose of irreverence. The Flying Dog Legend Grows
Two newsletters ago we released a video of George Stranahan, Flying Dog’s co-founder, telling the story of Flying Dog Breweries infamous origins. Well now it is George’s partner-in-crime, Richard McIntyre’s turn to spout poetic on the mess he’s got himself into including his checkered past. Click on the image to the left to watch the footage.
Save Road Dog Campaign
We had an overwhelming response to the “Save Road Dog Campaign” and you’ll be happy to know I read every one. I particularly like the emails throwing it back in our face with comments like, “If you assholes made Road Dog available in my area you might sell more.” Touche, good sir. The winner is below and I think I have enough fowl mouthed tirades to pull Eric back from the ledge. In the meantime, enjoy the lyrical stylings of Andy Borbely and drink up.
To put down my Road Dog and make him a bitch
All for some fiscal EFFICIENCY itch?!?!?
Don’t tell your mother, who’s raised you so well
That you’ll terminate her, too, if she ceases to sell!
Your Road Dog is burly, a robustly good porter,
A shotgun companion with every order.
A classic, a legend, an epic, a beast…
of water, of barley, of hops, and of yeast.
Profits and margins and dollars come second
To any dog bringing me sixers when beckoned.
Your brewery constantly says “Fuck You” with ease,
To drinkers that Coors Light would easily please.
This porter may not be meant for the masses
With heads so thoroughly lodged in their asses.
So ball up, and man up, and shut up, and sell
More Road Dog who’s loyally served you so well.
Honorable Mentions: Brian Crandall, Andy Skinner, Tony Base, Randall Williams, Brian Shelton, Walter White Trips of a Lifetime
And we are not talking about the chemically induced kind either. Last weekend Peter Frey and Ryan Moll of Beaver Dam, WI joined Flying Dog Brewery in Telluride, CO for the Telluride Blues and Brews Festival. After winning Flying Dog’s national contest we treated the two winners to VIP treatment as they listened to world class musicians and drank there woes away.
On a similar note, the winner of our Great American Beer Festival Sweepstakes has been chosen. Jonathan McIntyre hailing from Arlington, VA will be headed to the Great American Beer Festival for 3 days at one of the world’s biggest beer celebrations. We encourage all the members of the People’s Republic of Flying Dog to play hooky from work and join us in Denver for the Great American Beer Festival, we’re just not paying for your trip.
Till next time, cheers!

The People’s Republic of Flying Dog is now in session. It’s happy hour at Flying Dog Brewery, so here is your latest dose of irreverenceHelp Save Road Dog!
We have no room to complain here at Flying Dog; with all your help we have been growing like crazy and spreading the Flying Dog gospel along the way. Unfortunately, there have been some disturbing rumblings coming from the office of Flying Dog President Eric Warner in recent weeks. Sales of Road Dog, the original Gonzo label done by Mr. Steadman, have been slumping and due to a keg shortage we already had to discontinue Road Dog on draft. Now, I know there are copious amounts of RoadDog fans out there and I would hate to see Eric make hasty decisions like he is known to do. Help me by joining in the “Save Road Dog Campaign”. Send your best defense for Road Dog to bullshit@flyingdogales.com and we will beat Eric into submission. The best response will be published in the next newsletter and win a free Road Dog t-shirt, pint glass and a Flying Dog cap. And for the sake of all that is holy, go out and drink some damn Road Dog.Check out more of Road Dog’s turbulent history at FlyingDogAles.com.
Send Us Your Video Last week I mentioned that Flying Dog had launched a new website called BeerDinners.com. We want to make your cooking skills world famous; not Food Network famous,700 but we’ll do the best we can. Send us video footage of your next beer dinner (or a YouTube link) and we will post the good, bad and ugly up on BeerDinners.com and Flying Dog Brewery’s video page. I haven’t figured out what you’ll get yet but the best submissions will be rewarded.
Flying Dog Apparel Artist Series
Flying Dog Apparel and SupportLocalCreativity.com are launching a new t-shirt series featuring designs from independent artists from around the country. If you are an artist and wish to submit your artwork for consideration, please email supportcreativity@supportlocalcreativity.com for full details. Artists will be paid for their artwork as well as being featured at SupportLocalCreativity.com. The submission deadline for Flying Dog’s first Artist Series is Oct. 31 so get inspired and help Flying Dog promote your work.
Till next time, cheers!

The People’s Republic Celebrates Dogtoberfest As Fall approaches, the People’s Republic of Flying Dog is once again poised to celebrate Dogtoberfest. Dogtoberfest is one of those holidays that holds a special place in the Flying Dog heart. Much like it’s contemporaries, St. Patrick’s Day and Cinco de Mayo, a majority of people don’t have any clue as to what or why they are celebrating. You should never need an excuse to go out and throw back a few beers with friends but if it makes you feel better about your decision, then who are we to judge? If you happen to have any interest as to why you are celebrating, click on this link to drink in the history of Oktoberfest.
Read a review of Dogtoberfest at Chris O’Brien’s Beer Activist Blog.
The Legend Of Flying Dog
Like any good legend, the Flying Dog story has many manifestations. We decided to go to Woody Creek and the story straight from the man that created it all, Flying Dog Co-founder George Stranahan. This doesn’t mean that we’ll quit telling all the other outrageous incarnations of this story; it just means now you’ll have a place to fact check.
Flying Dog Launches Two New Websites
BeerDinners.com is a new creation from Flying Dog Brewery, pairing food and beer in recipes you can prepare at home. Saving you from years of the oppressive thinking that wine creates better food pairings than beer, BeerDinner.com has a meal for every occasion with beer flavors to match. At first glance the recipes seem quite daunting, but I assure you that, if my domestically-challenged mind can grasp these concepts, then all you in the People’s Republic are in good shape.
If you have your own beer dinner recipes please share them at BeerDinners.com. Your meal could be featured on the website, subjecting you to worldwide praise and adoration. As anyone can see from our labels, art is a big part of Flying Dog. We wanted to create a way to support local, independent artists who will turn into the world’s next Ralph Steadman and Hunter Thompson or better yet, the world’s first version of themself. Support Local Creativity was started as a means to promote independent creative culture. Flying Dog noticed that people needed a common place to share ideas and promote their own creative aspirations, whether it be finding new ways to express your creative ideas, finding new venues to showcase your talents, or simply asking for help to further your creative aspirations. This blog is intended to act as a forum for people that don’t have the backing of money, studios/venues, promotion, or perhaps even a network. SupportLocalCreativity.com invites you to share your independent creative culture
Till next time, cheers!

I’m
quite fascinated by the lives of the homeless. In Denver they lived
under the bridge across the street from the Flying Dog Brewpub, at
least until the bridge was removed. I know they had marijuana because
one said, “Come on down Wednesday evening, bring some beers and we’ll
smoke some.â€
In Los Angeles they wheel their shopping carts into street-side public
spaces where they sit and talk but little; men can be social with very
few words, where are the homeless women? With X-ray eyes I peer at
their belongings: clothes yes, but no cookware, no books, a few
toiletries, every so now and again a photograph from some time before.
I suppose that throughout human history there have been
homeless─cavemen without a cave.
I see them as a community that practices the art and craft of
homelessness, and wonder if I could make it there. How bad could it be
compared to hiding inside and peering out?
