Kerberos Released On Unsuspecting Public

Posted by Chris  Published in Events, Beer, Announcements, Contests Permalinks

If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed. Thanks for visiting!

The People’s Republic of Flying Dog is now in session. It’s happy hour at Flying Dog Brewery, so here is your latest dose of irreverence.

Kerberos Released On Unsuspecting Public The long-awaited arrival of our Belgian-style Tripel is upon us. Named after the mythical Greek three-headed dog that guards the gates of hell, Kerberos is a traditional Belgian-style Tripel with a dark golden color has a sweet flavor with a dry and spicy finish. This nectar of the Gods is deceptively strong at 8.5% and is bottle conditioned for an authentic flavor. Beer nerd stuff below:

ABV: 8.5%
Plato: 19
Specialty Malts: 2-Row Pilsner, Aromatic
Hops: German Perle, French Strisserspalt, Saaz
Process: Bottle conditioned to create authentic Tripel character.

Check out www.FlyingDogAles.com for more on Kerberos and the rest of the Flying Dog litter of ales.

Cross Country Tour
From April 25th-28th the Flying Dog RV will be taking a tour down I-70 to the east coast. Because a 28-hour drive is long enough to make anyone ponder their existence, I thought it would be fun to spice up the trip with a contest. If you get a picture of the RV on the road during our journey and email it to me at bullshit@flyingdogales.com with the date, time, and location you took the picture, I will send you a gift package full of Flying Dog gear. If you don’t live anywhere near I-70 (which will prevent you from participating), you can take comfort in the fact that you get the consolation prize. You are miles away from my road rage and I won’t be rear-ending you when you’re talking on your cell phone while driving like an asshole.Flying Dog Lands At #29 In Craft Beer RankingsWe here at Flying Dog want to extend our gratitude to all those out there in the People’s Republic of Flying Dog for making us one of the country’s top 30 craft beer breweries. The numbers, just released by the Brewer’s Association (www.beertown.org), have Flying Dog jumping several spots from 2006. We appreciate the support - and get those livers trained because we expect you to step up and land us in the top 20 this year. Our Quest For World Domination ContinuesOn Monday, a container chock-full of delicious Flying Dog brews will start its journey to Singapore. As our latest addition to the People’s Republic of Flying Dog, Singaporeans will join the likes of Austria, Sweden, Denmark, the Netherlands, Norway, Italy, UK (and more!), further strengthening our ever-growing international contingent. Now if only the Brewery would pony up the cash to send me on a 4-month long “sales tour” to all those regions. I get no respect. What People Are Saying About Us Mostly unsolicited, outside opinions about our beer and our company from the media and world wide web. NEW SPRING SEASONAL RELEASED!

Posted by Chris  Published in Events, Beer, Announcements, Contests Permalinks

The People’s Republic of Flying Dog is now in session. It’s happy hour at Flying Dog Brewery, so here is your latest dose of irreverence.Flying Dog Releases New Spring Seasonal Garde Dog Biere De Garde, our new Spring Seasonal has started shipping to distributors across the country this week. Hailing from the French Flanders, Biere De Garde is a classic French farmhouse ale with Belgian influences. Bier De Garde, or “beer for keeping”, is traditionally brewed in March for drinking in the spring and summer months.  I will avoid any humorous, yet harmless French stereotyping in this newsletter because it is available to read on the label.

With it’s toasted aroma and spicy, malty sweetness, Garde Dog will liberate you from the winter doldrums.

Beer MadnessThe Washington Post has come up with the brilliant idea to create a college basketball-style March Madness competition for beer. Now, if only they had Vegas-style odds to match each round it would be the perfect competition. Old Scratch beat down its first round opponent, Michelob, but we actually lost the popular vote (a la the 2000 election). Seriously? We lost the popular vote to Michelob? I need members of the People’s Republic to step up and flog the next round opponent, Brooklyn Beer. To follow all the action and show your support for Old Scratch check out this link.
Flying Dog Photo ContestWith over 130 entries from the People’s Republic of Flying Dog we had a hell of a time picking a winner. There were many worthy entries and we thank everyone… blah, blah, blah. The winner entitled “The Last Call” was submitted by Mike Reaser and Mike Frederick. They win for creativity and execution. Congrats gentlemen, your Flying Dog neon will be shipping shortly. Check out their winning photo and all the contest entries at this link.

    The Big Beers Edition

Posted by Chris  Published in Events, Beer, Announcements Permalinks

The People’s Republic of Flying Dog is now in session. It’s happy hour at Flying Dog Brewery, so here is your latest dose of irreverence.New Canis Major Style on the WayWhat better way to kick off our big beer newsletter than announcing the release of our newest Canis Major brew, Kerberos Tripel? Kerberos is the Greek name for the three-headed hellhound that guarded the gates of the underworld, making it more than worthy of protecting the contents of this bottle. Kerberos will be available this Spring and will join Gonzo Imperial Porter, Horn Dog Barley Wine and Double Dog Double Pale Ale in our Canis Major Series, a complex breed of big and bold beers.

We used the finest imported Pilsner malt and Belgian candi sugar to give this beer its’ light malt flavor and color, accented by the complex flavors and aromas imparted by our unique yeast strain.

    Alcohol by Volume: 8.5%
    Plato: 19
    IBUs: 27
    Specialty Malts: 2-Row Pilsner, Aromatic
Hops: German Perle, French Strisserspalt, Saaz

Flying Dog Covered in New York TimesToday, the New York Times released an article on big beers, A Taste for Brews That Go to Extremes. This article highlights the budding obsession American brewers and drinkers have with cranking out bigger and badder brews. The article features our Double Dog Double Pale Ale along with 20+ other beers produced from a myriad of brewers across the country. For the full article, check out this link.

Flying Dog to  Release Canis Major Mixed PackMost big beers drink like a meal in a glass and were meant to be enjoyed with the same slow deliberation of a D.M.V. office. Well, Flying Dog is bringing to you the Canis Major Mixed Pack 4-pack, which is a sampling of one of each of our high gravity offerings so you can savor all four complex flavors without the fear of commitment. If only this were common practice with relationships. If variety is the spice of life, life just got a whole lot more scrumtrelescent.

Big Beers, Belgians and Barley Wine FestivalIf you want a chance to see what the big beer fad is all about, join Flying Dog Brewery as we pimp our Canis Major Series of beers at the Vail Big Beers, Belgians, and Barley Wine Festival. There will be about 150 extreme beers sampled in this intimate setting,
complete with with a world class beer dinner to kick things off on Friday night. Josh, our own beer dinner guru, will be slinging samples and spreading love to the People’s Republic, check our BeerDinners.com to see his work.
    Till next year, cheers

    And A Happy New Year…

Posted by Chris  Published in Beer, Announcements Permalinks

The People’s Republic of Flying Dog is now in session. It’s happy hour at Flying Dog Brewery, so here is your latest dose of irreverence. Some email services will block the newsletter format.
2008 PreviewEveryone here at the Brewery survived the holiday visits from our families and we hope everyone out there in the People’s Republic of Flying Dog fared as well as we did. This will be my last time talking with you until 2008 is in full swing and everyone has given up on their New Year’s resolution. As 2007 comes to an end, I figured I’d let everyone in on some of our 2008 plans so you can see it will be more of the same great beer and Gonzo lifestyle you’ve come to expect from Flying Dog. This is just the teaser, you will just have to wait for full details as the year progresses.

New Beers - In February we are releasing “Cerberus” Tripel, giving us four Canis Major beers, the perfect number of high-gravity brews for our new Canis Major Variety 4-pack. We will also be releasing a mixed eight-pack of 7oz. bottles, which will include two offerings of each Canis Major style. “Garde Dog” Biere De Garde, our new spring seasonal, will be released in March - giving us our strongest seasonal line-up yet. Finally, we will continue our Wild Dog specialty series with our 6th release, due out in the fall.
    Beer Dinners
    - Flying Dog started BeerDinners.com in 2007 and it continues to grow as we add recipes you can make at home, events and articles about food and beer pairings. We are also sponsoring Savor, a new event brought to you by the Brewer’s Association that will become America’s premier food and beer event.  There will be  many more details coming soon but if you are planning a trip in 2008, the Washington D.C. area May 16-17 will be a mecca for beer and food lovers.
Packaging - In early 2008, our new packaging will be hitting shelves nationwide. We gave Ralph’s art a new, cleaned up look with bolder colors and easier to read labels. Keep your eye out for the new stories that adorn every bottle of Flying Dog.

Flying Dog Hotline - Some people think we are crazy, and I might tend to agree, but we are creating the Flying Dog Hotline. Members of the People’s Republic can call us 24/7 and we will actually answer, most of the time and at least call you back when we don’t. Whether it’s a rant, rave or drunk dial, Flying Dog is on call.
Events - We will continue to bring you events around the country, whether it’s charitable gatherings, beer festivals or art events, we will bring good times to all. Keep an eye on our events calendar at FlyingDogAles.com and our event list in the newsletter. Check out the video we recently filmed at a benefit for the Woman’s Lighthouse Project. Click on the image to view.Contests - Last year we gave you a chance to win a trip to the Great American Beer Festival and Telluride Blues and Brews. In 2008, we will continue to have contests available at FlyingDogAles.com with chances to win free shit from Flying Dog and special contests only available to our loyal newsletter readers.

Online - We continually update our website as well as our blogs, FlyingDogNews.com, FlyingDogBlog.com, LeadDogBlog.com, BeerDinners.com, and SupportLocalCreativity.com so if you haven’t had a chance to check any of these out, it is your way to communicate with us at any time. We also have an extensive list of bloggers that are an important part of the craft beer community so if you haven’t, check out our blog links page and get educated.

We will see you in 2008 and send this year out in Gonzo fashion.
    Till next year, cheers

    K-9 Cruiser Released!

Posted by Chris  Published in Beer, Announcements Permalinks

The People’s Republic of Flying Dog is now in session. It’s happy hour at Flying Dog Brewery, so here is your latest dose of irreverence. K-9 Cruiser Makes Annual AppearanceFlying Dog’s winter seasonal, K-9 Cruiser, has been released nationwide just in time for the Holidays. There is no better way to cope with your obnoxious family than K-9 Cruiser in mass quantities. Dark, sweet and malty, K-9 Cruiser goes great with with almost any holiday food.  For more info on K-9, click on the bottle to the left.
    Thanksgiving Beer Pairings
The Brewers Association has come up with a program called Craft
Beer and Food for the Holidays
. As a participant, Flying Dog has put together some beer pairings with traditional holiday foods. This Thanksgiving, put those winos in their place. For other food and beer pairings, check out www.BeerDinners.com.

    Traditional Roast Turkey
: The roasted and caramelized skin matches well with a golden ale like Flying Dog’s Tire Bite.

    Ham
: In-Heat Wheat’s taste profile often reminds people of banana and clove notes and would be a perfect pairing with ham that is prepared with fruit and seasonings.

    Duck
: Flying Dog’s Winter Seasonal, K-9 Cruiser, makes a perfect companion to a darker meat like duc, which offers a richer flavor than turkey.

    Salmon
: An amber lager like Old Scratch can offer a clean toasted malt note to offset the firm flavors of salmon without a lot of bitterness that would overwhelm the fish.

    Leg of Lamb
: Pale ales like Doggie-style Classic Pale Ale provide a pleasant foil to lamb with a spicy or herbal character to complement the character of the meat along with some toasted malt notes. Or for more harmony with the roasted flavors of the meat, try Road Dog Porter.

    Beef Tenderloin
: This rich hearty cut of meat deserves a robust beer as a counterpoint but also calls for some contrast to clear the palate between bites. The ideal companion would Double Dog Double Pale Ale.
    Weekly Treat
I’m going to do my best to make this sound like a L.L. Bean catalog. Flying Dog Apparel’s weekly discount item is this stylish beanie. With ski season quickly approaching, you can make all your friends envy your superior fashion sense and thrifty shopping habits. Besides, Neal said if Brianne doesn’t sell all these by the end of November she is going to get fired. I really like staring at her across the desk so help a brotha out and buy one.
    Neal Stewart = Huge Deal
Neal is the Director of Marketing for Flying Dog and the boss of yours truly. He also happens to be a huge deal in the marketing world. He is currently in Las Vegas speaking at the Word Of Mouth Marketing Association conference. This is a link to a blog that is written about Mr. Stewart from a gentleman that apparently has a huge man crush on him. Unfortunately, Neal turned down his invite to the prom.

    Till next time, cheers

    OLD SCRATCH WINS GABF BRONZE

Posted by Chris  Published in Events, Beer, Announcements Permalinks

The People’s Republic of Flying Dog is now in session. It’s happy hour at Flying Dog Brewery, so here is your latest dose of irreverence.Old Scratch Wins Bronze

With another Great American Beer Festival (GABF) in the books, Old Scratch has once again added to its trophy case. Old Scratch, our most award winning beer, now boasts 2 GABF Gold Medals - one Bronze, a World Beer Cup Silver Medal and a couple international awards; all in the past 3 years. Let’s hope Old Scratch can avoid the steroid scandals that have recently caused other world-class performers to be stripped of their hardware.

Some of you out there in the People’s Republic might be asking, “One medal? Who’s judging this competition?” We prefer to look at the glass half full. There were over 2700 beers judged and many breweries walked away empty handed. Besides, we would rather impress all of the Citizen’s of the Republic than some snooty beer judge with a “Million Dollar Palate”.

     Great American Beer Festival Videos

For all you members of the People’s Republic who wanted to come to the GABF festivities but made up some lame excuse to prevent yourselves from having the time of your life: We say shame on you! Luckily, we were kind enough record a bunch of the action, so pull up a chair and a six-pack and have your own GABF party in the safety of your own home. Click on the image to the left to check out the video footage of the GABF, our Zombie Dance Party, as well as the Wild Dog Release Party.

Additionally, Justin Davis from the podcast Davis On Draft came and did a live taping at our Wild Dog Release Party, complete with an interview with our Head Brewer, Matt Brophy. He leads up to the interview by sampling and describing some of the specialty beers we had available. Click here to listen to the podcast.

    Till next time, cheers

    Chris

Dad, I’ve heard your stories, and mostly more than once. And you showed me
the medals and the expert rifleman pin, you know I love you and am
proud of you. I know you were in the army; and I understand that was a
big deal for you and that you need to retell the stories. Let me be
clear about what I hate; I hate war. You went to war, your granddaddy
went to war, and endless great great granddaddies back to the beginning
of time went to war. You all together have built a world where I too
will have to go to war, and I hate you all for this.

When you glorify and make heroes of warriors, you will have warriors until the end of time.

“Only the dead have seen the end of war.”

NEW WILD DOG SPECIALTY BEER ON THE PROWL

Posted by Chris  Published in Events, Beer Permalinks

The People’s Republic of Flying Dog is now in session. It’s happy hour at Flying Dog Brewery, so here is your latest dose of irreverence.New Wild Dog Specialty Beer Released
It may seem like we say this every time we release a Wild Dog beer, but our newest brew really is Flying Dog’s most unique beer to date. Collaborator Doppelbock was created through Flying Dog’s Open Source Beer Project, which gave amateur brewers a chance to give our brewing team recommendations and feedback on everything from the grain, hops and yeast to the brewing process itself. We combined your feedback and created a unique Doppelbock recipe to brew up and release. Collaborator has a full body with a sweet malt profile and a slight roast character. The complete recipe and printable labels are available for download at www.OpenSourceBeerProject.com. We want to thank everyone who contributed to creating this beer; it truly was a collaboration.

    The Great American Beer Festival

It is once again time for the biggest celebration in beer, The Great American Beer Festival. As beer freaks from around the globe arrive here in Denver, it would be rude for Flying Dog (being Denver’s largest brewery) not to be a good hometown host. Just in case three days packed with 4 drinking sessions of over 1700 beers wasn’t enough for people we have planned a bevy of additional events, including our now infamous, completely unofficial and unsanctioned Great American Beer Festival after-parties. The Flying Dog Legend Grows

Posted by Chris  Published in Events, Videos, Beer Permalinks

The People’s Republic of Flying Dog is now in session. It’s happy hour at Flying Dog Brewery, so here is your latest dose of irreverence. The Flying Dog Legend Grows
Two newsletters ago we released a video of George Stranahan, Flying Dog’s co-founder, telling the story of Flying Dog Breweries infamous origins. Well now it is George’s partner-in-crime, Richard McIntyre’s turn to spout poetic on the mess he’s got himself into including his checkered past. Click on the image to the left to watch the footage.

    Save Road Dog Campaign
We had an overwhelming response to the “Save Road Dog Campaign” and you’ll be happy to know I read every one. I particularly like the emails throwing it back in our face with comments like, “If you assholes made Road Dog available in my area you might sell more.” Touche, good sir. The winner is below and I think I have enough fowl mouthed tirades to pull Eric back from the ledge. In the meantime, enjoy the lyrical stylings of Andy Borbely and drink up.
To put down my Road Dog and make him a bitch
All for some fiscal EFFICIENCY itch?!?!?
Don’t tell your mother, who’s raised you so well
That you’ll terminate her, too, if she ceases to sell!
Your Road Dog is burly, a robustly good porter,
A shotgun companion with every order.
    A classic, a legend, an epic, a beast…
of water, of barley, of hops, and of yeast.
Profits and margins and dollars come second
To any dog bringing me sixers when beckoned.
Your brewery constantly says “Fuck You” with ease,
To drinkers that Coors Light would easily please.
This porter may not be meant for the masses
With heads so thoroughly lodged in their asses.
So ball up, and man up, and shut up, and sell
More Road Dog who’s loyally served you so well.

Honorable Mentions: Brian Crandall, Andy Skinner, Tony Base, Randall Williams, Brian Shelton, Walter WhiteTrips of a Lifetime
And we are not talking about the chemically induced kind either. Last weekend Peter Frey and Ryan Moll of Beaver Dam, WI joined Flying Dog Brewery in Telluride, CO for the Telluride Blues and Brews Festival. After winning Flying Dog’s national contest we treated the two winners to VIP treatment as they listened to world class musicians and drank there woes away.

On a similar note, the winner of our Great American Beer Festival Sweepstakes has been chosen. Jonathan McIntyre hailing from Arlington, VA will be headed to the Great American Beer Festival for 3 days at one of the world’s biggest beer celebrations. We encourage all the members of the People’s Republic of Flying Dog to play hooky from work and join us in Denver for the Great American Beer Festival, we’re just not paying for your trip.

    Till next time, cheers!

    SAVE ROAD DOG CAMPAIGN

Posted by Chris  Published in Events, Promotions, Beer, Contests Permalinks

The People’s Republic of Flying Dog is now in session. It’s happy hour at Flying Dog Brewery, so here is your latest dose of irreverenceHelp Save Road Dog!

We have no room to complain here at Flying Dog; with all your help we have been growing like crazy and spreading the Flying Dog gospel along the way. Unfortunately, there have been some disturbing rumblings coming from the office of Flying Dog President Eric Warner in recent weeks. Sales of Road Dog, the original Gonzo label done by Mr. Steadman, have been slumping and due to a keg shortage we already had to discontinue Road Dog on draft. Now, I know there are copious amounts of RoadDog fans out there and I would hate to see Eric make hasty decisions like he is known to do. Help me by joining in the “Save Road Dog Campaign”. Send your best defense for Road Dog to bullshit@flyingdogales.com and we will beat Eric into submission. The best response will be published in the next newsletter and win a free Road Dog t-shirt, pint glass and a Flying Dog cap. And for the sake of all that is holy, go out and drink some damn Road Dog.Check out more of Road Dog’s turbulent history at FlyingDogAles.com.

Send Us Your VideoLast week I mentioned that Flying Dog had launched a new website called BeerDinners.com. We want to make your cooking skills world famous; not Food Network famous,700 but we’ll do the best we can. Send us video footage of your next beer dinner (or a YouTube link) and we will post the good, bad and ugly up on BeerDinners.com and Flying Dog Brewery’s video page. I haven’t figured out what you’ll get yet but the best submissions will be rewarded.

    Flying Dog Apparel Artist Series
Flying Dog Apparel and SupportLocalCreativity.com are launching a new t-shirt series featuring designs from independent artists from around the country. If you are an artist and wish to submit your artwork for consideration, please email supportcreativity@supportlocalcreativity.com for full details. Artists will be paid for their artwork as well as being featured at SupportLocalCreativity.com. The submission deadline for Flying Dog’s first Artist Series is Oct. 31 so get inspired and help Flying Dog promote your work.

    The People’s Republic Celebrates Dogtoberfest

Posted by Chris  Published in Events, Videos, Beer, Announcements Permalinks

The People’s Republic of Flying Dog is now in session. It’s happy hour at Flying Dog Brewery, so here is your latest dose of irreverence.
The People’s Republic Celebrates Dogtoberfest As Fall approaches, the People’s Republic of Flying Dog is once again poised to celebrate Dogtoberfest. Dogtoberfest is one of those holidays that holds a special place in the Flying Dog heart. Much like it’s contemporaries, St. Patrick’s Day and Cinco de Mayo, a majority of people don’t have any clue as to what or why they are celebrating. You should never need an excuse to go out and throw back a few beers with friends but if it makes you feel better about your decision, then who are we to judge? If you happen to have any interest as to why you are celebrating, click on this link to drink in the history of Oktoberfest.
Read a review of Dogtoberfest at Chris O’Brien’s Beer Activist Blog.

    The Legend Of Flying Dog

Like any good legend, the Flying Dog story has many manifestations. We decided to go to Woody Creek and the story straight from the man that created it all, Flying Dog Co-founder George Stranahan. This doesn’t mean that we’ll quit telling all the other outrageous incarnations of this story; it just means now you’ll have a place to fact check.

Flying Dog Launches Two New Websites

BeerDinners.com is a new creation from Flying Dog Brewery, pairing food and beer in recipes you can prepare at home. Saving you from years of the oppressive thinking that wine creates better food pairings than beer, BeerDinner.com has a meal for every occasion with beer flavors to match. At first glance the recipes seem quite daunting, but I assure you that, if my domestically-challenged mind can grasp these concepts, then all you in the People’s Republic are in good shape.

If you have your own beer dinner recipes please share them at BeerDinners.com. Your meal could be featured on the website, subjecting you to worldwide praise and adoration. As anyone can see from our labels, art is a big part of Flying Dog. We wanted to create a way to support local, independent artists who will turn into the world’s next Ralph Steadman and Hunter Thompson or better yet, the world’s first version of themself. Support Local Creativity was started as a means to promote independent creative culture. Flying Dog noticed that people needed a common place to share ideas and promote their own creative aspirations, whether it be finding new ways to express your creative ideas, finding new venues to showcase your talents, or simply asking for help to further your creative aspirations. This blog is intended to act as a forum for people that don’t have the backing of money, studios/venues, promotion, or perhaps even a network. SupportLocalCreativity.com invites you to share your independent creative culture
    Till next time, cheers!

    Chris

    I’m
quite fascinated by the lives of the homeless. In Denver they lived
under the bridge across the street from the Flying Dog Brewpub, at
least until the bridge was removed. I know they had marijuana because
one said, “Come on down Wednesday evening, bring some beers and we’ll
    smoke some.”

In Los Angeles they wheel their shopping carts into street-side public
spaces where they sit and talk but little; men can be social with very
few words, where are the homeless women? With X-ray eyes I peer at
their belongings: clothes yes, but no cookware, no books, a few
toiletries, every so now and again a photograph from some time before.
I suppose that throughout human history there have been
    homeless─cavemen without a cave.

I see them as a community that practices the art and craft of
homelessness, and wonder if I could make it there. How bad could it be
compared to hiding inside and peering out?
