Pressure washing is the first step painting exterior surfaces. Exterior surfaces receive much dust and debris not easily seen, until high pressure washing is applied. Working from top down, dust and debris is removed, using a high pressure washing tip from the ground. The common thought is pressure washing will remove all flaking paint, but this is not true. Giving a clean surface for the paint to bond is one of the first important keys to a quality paint job. These portable gas powered pressure washing machines allow us to get around the structure rather easily. Notice the blue non-marking high-pressure hose, rated a 3500 psi, will not leave marks on concrete as some other less expensive hoses can do. After the substrate has had time to dry out (24-48 hours) hand scraping is administered, checking for paint that has lifted but still down, creating air pockets. This paint is ready to peel, but hasn't, which is not protecting the substrate it is covering. We see more of air-pocket paint, than peeling paint which is easier to see from a distance, as we work behind the scraper. Again, we are not trying to remove peeling paint by pressure washing, as power washing will only remove what is actually flaking and has already curled up.
Pressure washing is also used for cleaning cars, concrete, fences, decks, garage floors, however substrates all having different densities, the correct tip must be used in conjuction with distance from target, as this high pressure spray can marr softer sufaces. Pressure washing and cleaning will be later discussed in depth at www.paintexterior.com
Pressure washing exterior homes is not a question for us at Eco Paint Specialist's, as we come out a day or two before we are scheduled, taking only 1 hour to give a quick high pressure rinse.
