The People’s Republic of Flying Dog is now in session. It’s happy hour at Flying Dog Brewery, so here is your latest dose of irreverence.
Flying Dog’s Poet Laureate Is…
Reading this poem, remember one thought.
Brewers, we are. Poets, we’re not.
Entries were many, littered with lyrical force.
Choosing a victor took proper discourse.
Beer drinker troubadours? Most impressed are we.
Newsletter readers, far more talented than me.
Make Hunter proud, the only parameter.
Poems came in Song, Haiku, and Iambic Pentameter.
Mr. Steadman’s opinion, carefully inspected.
Flying Dog’s Poet Laureate, was officially selected.
Objections made fall onto indifferent shrugs.
Next time use performance enhancing drugs.
The People’s Republic deserves our cheer.
For once again proving Good People Drink Good Beer.
Without further ado, named best in show.
Chuck Snowdon our winner his work of art below.
Although Chuck may never reach the stature of other great beer drinking artists like Hunter Thompson, Hemingway, William S. Burroughs or Johnny Cash, he now holds the title of Flying Dog Brewery Poet Laureate which is almost as good. And by almost as good, we mean it in that winning the lottery is almost as good as getting kicked in the balls. Chuck’s poem can also be found on the Flying Dog Contest Page. Additionally, he is the proud new owner of a Ralph Steadman signed skateboard, a Flying Dog Flag and a Gonzo Imperial Porter t-shirt. We want to thank everyone for their participation; your poems were a pleasure to read. A special thanks to Ralph’s “dear friend and England’s greatest poet, Adrian Mitchell” who also helped us select our winner. He has a new book out you should look up called Tell Me Lies, a collection of poems from 2005-2008. I’m Chris Rippe and I approve this message.
counterpoint
Flamboyant sunshine
high sky and straggly clouds
things to do, places to go
warm, with a hint of fall in the shade
staccato laughter of families and lovers against
a mosaic of cries, conversations & barks
bright colors cut by sharp edged shadows
in stark definition to a khaki landscape
a tongue lick gathers lip sweat, furtively
mouth breath labors imperceptibly
squinting, searching, moving
to and fro, to and fro, to and fro
OUTSIDE
you survive
Sunlight crawls
grudgingly to the bar
at home, finally, midst
the bottles & glasses, reflective
a shadowless dusk, perpetually
backlit by flickering TVs
dappling the aged patina
the grain read only by Braille
body warmth swirled by ceiling fans
grumbles of conversation, jukebox burbles
soothed and enveloped by
the peace of a good beer
INSIDE
you belong

GonzoFest: The Habañero Incident
Our newest video is a great snapshot of GonzoFest madness. We included the Hard Times Chili Cook-Off at this year’s GonzoFest, and the added entertainment of “drunkies” trying to impress people by eating habañero peppers wasn’t on our list of benefits. That was an oversight on our part because watching this dude sweat while referencing pudding and fruit cake is priceless. Kind sir, you are welcome back to any Flying Dog event! There is nothing quite like sharing a beer with 40,000 of your closest friends. The Great American Beer Festival is once again approaching this October 9-11. Along with it’s normal onslaught of 400+ breweries and 1800+ beers Flying Dog Brewery will be bringing you our normal allotment of bonus features. Because every good party needs a pre-party on Friday October 10th from 4pm-6pm we will play host to the Flying Dog, Brats and Gonzo party, “FBAG” for short (GABF backwards). Everyone is invited and for full details on the FBAG party please visit the event page. Lastly, Flying Dog will be joining forces with Draft Magazine and Braun’s Bar and Grill on Saturday October 11th at 6pm to bring you a beer dinner experience that will change the way you think about food and beer and quite possibly your life at the same time. To make reservations please follow this link.
