Mike Freeman, a member of the Flying Dog Family (in fact, our longest standing employee) has recently been diagnosed with glioblastoma multiforme or GBM, a very rare and aggressive form of brain cancer - similar to what Ted Kennedy has. Seeing as we have this newsletter list and you are loyal citizens of the People’s Republic of Flying Dog, I’m am definitely not above begging for support in Mike’s fight. There are several ways you can help if you are so inclined.
Eric Warner Makes Senior PGA Tour BidThis is a sad day for this writer of the Flying Dog newsletter. One of the main villains in my story has decided to leave Flying Dog Brewery for new challenges (I imagine it’s mainly his quest for weekday golfing glory). After an 8 year reign, Flying Dog President and CEO Eric Warner is stepping out of the limelight. Eric, you will be missed and we wish you the best of luck. Fortunately for Flying Dog Brewery, Eric is being replaced by the more than capable Jim Caruso who has been in the Flying Dog family for 15 years including 11 years as chairman of our board. Unfortunately for my boss Neal, the other villain in my story and our Prime Minister of Marketing, he will have to start at ground zero with his “Executive Ass-Kissing” Program. This Thursday (July 10th), Flying Dog Brewery will be hosting the first session of our monthly Food and Beer Night in the Flying Dog Brewery tasting room. “Beer and Cheese” is this month’s theme, and will be co-hosted by Flying Dog Executive Brewer Matt Brophy and Quality Control Goddess Gwen Conley. We will be presenting five Flying Dog beers with 7 different cheeses. Click here for RSVP information or to see a larger version of the very small menu to the left. We promise to give the People’s Republic more notice for Session 2. We’ve got plenty of ideas in the hopper for this, including “Beer and Chocolate”, “Beer and Barbecue”, and more.

Breakfast alone again. A nice hot kipper on buttered
toast and strong black tea. As a young photographer he was my inspiration and
teacher. He is composing in his head a letter he will send to
me:
“I have not taken any pictures for many years. I can not
remember when last I made a print in my darkroom, but it was well over sixteen
years ago. I had a golden retriever that was given to me. She developed a very
unstable form of diabetes and could never be left alone for even a few minutes.
With no forewarning she would develop hypoglycemia and immediately had to be fed
Karo syrup to prevent her from having convulsions. In addition she also
developed thyroid cancer and a benign liver tumor. What with tests, insulin
shots, pills, specially prepared meals, trips to the local vet, and flights to
the vet college at Cornell, just to keep her up and running required about four
or more hours a day. Every morning when I got up, I wondered if that day would
be the one on which I would lose her, and then one day sixteen and a half years
ago I did.
In a book of Joseph Sudek’s photographs he is quoted,
“You should never lose contact with that which is close to your heart; at most
you can make an interruption for half a year. If it is longer you lose the
thread and never find it again.”
Sudak was correct. I never found it again, and I never
see anything that I want to photograph anymore.”
