Reminder to the People’s Republic of Flying Dog:

Go out today and celebrate the life of our good friend and co-conspirator, Hunter Thompson. His journalism and social commentary are timeless. So open one of his books, take a stand, live by your own set of rules and most of all have fun, even if it’s only for a day.

The Gonzo torch is still being carried by Hunter’s son, Juan Thompson through events like the Hunter S. Thompson Symposium, hosted by the Aspen Institute on Saturday, July 21st in Aspen, CO. The event will focus on the 25th anniversary of Thompson’s Fear and Loathing on the Campaign Trail ‘72 and relevance for the 2008 presidential campaigns. Details are below and tickets are still available so get a crazy hair up your ass and take a road trip.

ASPEN, Colo.— Juan Thompson and the Aspen Institute are hosting a symposium on Saturday, July 21, 2007, on the work of late gonzo writer Hunter S. Thompson, with particular emphasis on his seminal political book, Fear and Loathing on the Campaign Trail ‘72.

The book chronicles the presidential contest between George McGovern and Richard Nixon. 25 years after it was published, it still remains, what the New York Times called, “The best account yet published of what it feels like to be out there in the middle of the American political process.” The symposium will probe the particular relevance of the book to the 2008 presidential campaigns.

WHO:             Distinguished participants include Professor Douglas Brinkley, Pulitzer-Prize winning journalists Carl Bernstein and Loren Jenkins, Michael Isikoff of Newsweek, attorney Gerald Goldstein, actress and playwright Anna Deveare Smith, journalist Curtis Robinson, scholar Dr. Edward Bastian, author John Nichols, Dr. Audrey Sprenger and others

WHAT:           The symposium on July 21, 2007, will consist of two events:

·        A small invite-only daytime discussion among participants

·        8:00 p.m. panel discussion moderated by Walter Isaacson in the Doerr-Hosier Center on the Institute’s Aspen Meadows campus in Aspen, CO. Open to the public.     Cost is $25

In conjunction with the symposium, Explore Booksellers will host a book signing on Friday, July 20, from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. Carl Bernstein will be signing his latest bestseller, A Woman in Charge: The Life of Hillary Rodham Clinton, and Professor Douglas Brinkley will be signing The Great Deluge, The Proud Highway: Saga of a Desperate Southern Gentleman (Letters of Hunter S. Thompson) 1955-1967, and Fear and Loathing in America: Letters of Hunter S. Thompson 1968-1976
